George and Lydia Petty Bible.

This is printed in Source:Petty Papers : A Genealogical Research Quarterly Newsletter (J.W. Petty), Volume 2, No. 1 (July 1977), pp. 18-20. There are two copies Petty Papers offered through the Family History Library. Unfortunately the copy I ordered was missing this issue, containing the item I wanted most. This copy was found in a library.

George Petty was one of the earliest settlers of Dover, Tennessee, arriving there by 1804. He ran a tavern on the Cumberland River. If the naming of the Petty Street in Dover is significant (this website says it led to his house), his homestead may may have been about where we now find the Dover Hotel (where General Grant accepted the surrender of General Buckner at the Battle of Fort Donelson - wikipedia:Fort Donelson).

Note that the Bible was printed in 1816. This means that many of the earlier events must have been recorded some years after the fact. There are a couple of misspellings which appear to have been introduced in the transcription of the Bible (typical typing errors, unlikely in a handwritten document), besides the authentic misspellings of the time period, but none that appear to affect dates and critical information. The misspellings have been preserved as they were found.

Everything below the line is a verbatim transcription of what is presented about the Bible by The Petty Papers, except for minor layout changes.

The George and Lydia Petty Family Bible

This bible record was received from D. Dale Combs of Wallingford, Connecticut.

Although the main title page of this old bible has been lost, the title page of the New Testatment portion provides information regarding its publication:

(Holbrook's Stereotype Edition)
"The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Transelated out Of The Original Greek; and With The Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised -- Stereotyped by B. and J. Collins, New York. Brattleborough, Vermont, Printed and Sold by John Holbrook, 1816."

Four "Family Record" pages are found between the Old Testament and the Apocrypha.
