Create a Source or MySource?
Source pages are like cards in a library card catalog. They:
- help others find sources they can use in their own research,
- encourage good citation, and
- include notes about how to find and use the source.
Create Source pages for sources that:
- are publicly available so others can use them,
- are expected to be accessible years from now, and
- apply to multiple individuals so they will be useful to others.
If your source does not meet these criteria create a MySource page.

- Article: article in a newspaper or periodical; please consider creating a source for the newspaper or periodical instead.
- Book: authored or unauthored; however, books that are just transcriptions of government or church records should be given a source type of government / church records.
- Government / Church records: geographically-oriented government, church, or institutional records, including originals, digital/microfilm images, or books/websites that are record transcriptions; the title field is the title of the record collection, microfilm, book, or website; the place covered field is the primary place (e.g., county or state) covered by the records.
- Newspaper: current or historical; enter the place issued if you know it.
- Periodical: enter the publisher if you know it.
- Website: original content (not transcriptions of offline records, family trees, or message boards) on more than a handful of people.
- If a website is a transcription of a book or government/church records, create a Source page for the book or government/church records collection and list the website as a repository.
- Create MySource pages for online family trees and message boards or sites that cover just a handful of people.
- Miscellaneous / Unknown: other types of sources.
