On October 3, 1786 A group of fourteen families including 27 persons, were moving to central Kentucky along the Wilderness road. They were now within 60 miles of Boonesborro, and camped for the night near modern London KY. On previous nights they had set guards as a precaution against Indian attack, but this night no guard was set, perhaps because nothing had happened so far, and they were nearing the end of their journey. The Indians choose that night to attack, and massacred the settlers. All but three members of the party were killed. The site is commonly known as "Defeated Camp" or McNitt’s Defeat after one of the party leaders.
