"Just so" stories offer simple and intuitively obvious explanations for things which seem to need an explanation, but for which no factual explanation can be found.
Example: The surname "Snoddy' is a corruption of the original "Snowday". The name Snowday came about when a man by the name of Fergus escaped from prison, under cover of a snow storm. Not wishing to use his own name, he took the name "Snowday" to commemorate his escape." The story is simple, and intuitively obvious, and "makes sense" to most people. Whether there is any truth to the story probably can not be determined. Nor can it be easily refuted, except for those who simply wish to label the story "preposterious".
