John Ehninger Born 1827, New York, New York Died 1889, Saratoga Springs, New York Yankee Peddler, 1858 Oil on canvas Gift of William F. Laporte, 1925 25.876

The Yankee peddler was a popular American type in art and literature. Before the 1830s, most peddlers came from New England (hence the term “Yankee”) and served an important economic function by distributing manufactured urban products to rural areas. By the 1850s, Yankee peddlers were obsolete, making this image a nostalgic view of country life. Like peddlers, country artists were itinerant, traveling throughout the countryside selling their wares.
