[edit] TextVernice Goschie May 29, 1923 - April 19, 2012 SILVERTON - Vernice Lorraine Goschie was born on May 29, 1923 in Holt, Minnesota to Norwegian immigrants Elling and Ragna Tollefsrud. After walking to school through bitterly cold winters, at the age of 13, Vernice, her sister Elaine and parents moved to a small farm outside Silverton in 1936. She was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Silverton, graduated from Silverton High School and went on earn her teaching certificate at Mt. Angel College. She taught briefly before marrying her fellow high school classmate and sweetheart Herman Goschie in 1945. From that point on, Vernice raised their four children and served as the growing farm’s bookkeeper and paymaster for over 40 years. Active in Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Angel, Vernice led Sunday school classes, bible studies and held several offices in the Ladies Aid. She was a member, officer and fundraiser for her Silverton PEO chapter. Herman always said that one of her biggest contributions was holding down the home front while sending him out the door to serve their industry, church and community. Vernice enjoyed following every aspect of her children and grandchildren’s lives, often expressing of how lucky she felt to have all her children living so close. From her desk overlooking the farm entrance, she followed all farm activities noting the movement of every car, pickup, tractor and type of farm equipment. Vernice enjoyed caring for both her home and garden where she found beauty in God’s natural world. Likewise she found beauty and relaxation in sewing and especially her needlepoint. Preceding Vernice in death was her husband of 66 years Herman. She is survived by their children Susan, Gordon and wife Sandy, Gayle and Glenn and grandchildren Dallas and Riley. In addition she leaves her sister Elaine Torvend, brother-in law, Stan Torvend and nephews David and Duane Torvend, and nephew Conley Tharaldson. Internment will take place on Thursday, April 26 at 2 p.m. at Miller's Cemetery followed by a 3 p.m. service and reception at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Angel. Memorials can be made to either Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Angel or Silverton Health Foundation. [edit] Sources
