Stone in the Birse kirkyard is worn but still legible. Inscription reads:
"Here is interred
the remains of JEAN BIRSS spouseto
SHAW CATANACH in the Forest of
Birse who died 28 October 1809 aged 55
years. Also of their son ARCHIBALD
who died 13 January 1809 aged 16 years.
Also the said SHAW CATANACH
died 20 April 1842 aged 90.
MAT XXIV 42 Watch therefore for ye
know not what hour your Lord
doth come.
Also their son ALEXANDER
who died October 1836 aged 36 years.
His wife HELEN CATTANACH[sic]
who died 16 September 1881 aged 80 years."
