William McMahon, in the 66th year of his age. Col. McMahon was born in Augusta county, Virginia, on the 12th of August, 1780, and removed thence to the adjoining county of Rockingham in 1809 and from thence to Alabama in 1838. He entered the service of his country at the commencement of the late war with Great Britain, as a private in a troop of cavalry, which went from Rockingham county to the defence of the sea-board. He was, soon after entering the service, elected to the captaincy of the troop, in which capacity he served until peace was declared; beloved by his company, and with the assurance that his services were appreciated by his country. As a Representative of the county of Rockingham, for eight or ten years, in the lower House of Delegates, as well as the Represntative of the counties of Rockingham and Pendleton for several sessions in the Senate of the same State, he aquitted himself with credit and to the satisfaction of his constituents. He was active, zealous and indefatigable in his efforts before the people of his county, and in the Legislature, in bringing about a call for a convention, which resulted, in 1829, in the amemded Constitution of Virginia. - In all the relations of husband, father, master, friend and citizen, he was kind, tender, benevolent, urbane and dutiful. His last illness was borne with the patience, resignation and fortitude characteristic of the man. And he departed this life calmly, quietly and without regret; at peace with man, and under the firm assurance that he had also made peace with his Maker.
