Mae Amelia Zeller Oxenreider

Community leader and author Mae Amelia Oxenreider was born in South Heidelberg Township in December 1908. Mae attended Huntzinger’s School in South Heidelberg Township and became the eighth-grade valedictorian in 1922. She was also valedictorian of the Wernersville High School graduating class in 1926.

Eight years later, in 1934, Mae married George Dundore Oxenreider, the son of Charles C. and Agnes I, Oxenreider. Mae and George had three children: George Jr., Anne Marie and Elaine Mae.

During the 19505 and 19605 while her children were growing up. Mae was active in 4-H Club, Girl Scouts. and the Conrad Weiser PTA, serving as PTA president from 1962 to 1966.

In 1926 Mae had become the first woman employed by Wernersville National Bank. She worked at the bank until 1941, when her first child was born.

She also worked as a reporter for the Reading Times from the 1930s to the 1960s and served as borough secretary for Wenersville from 1964 to 1975.
