To the Hon.ble the Legislative Council of General Assembly of the State of New Jersey at Trenton Convened?

The petition of a number of Freeholders & other Inhabitants Of the Township of Newton & County of Sussex Assembly heweth That your Petitioners ever since The Commonwealth of the Present Unhapy War have endeavored with a cheerfull _ becom__ _eal to support and maintain The great _ Glorius Cause in which The United States are now Engaged. Not only by supposing their Person to every Spuier?? of hardship and Hazard in the day of Battle and Danger by endeavouring to repell with Force of Arms The Lawless Invadors of their Country and its rights, but more especially a home, by Foiling and Labouring to furnish Supplys of Provisions and Forage of every kind for the use of the Army by raising and Maintaining at their own prevale Charge Teams in the public Service, by suffering their Meadows to be pastured by Large Droves of Continental Horses and in Working upon the High Ways by the directions of the Quarter Masters or their Agents in order for the more safe & east transporting of the public Stores from Port to Port for all which Supplyrs granted and Services done within one year last past many of your Petit’s? have rec’d none, others but very small parts of their pay – Notwithstanding the repeated promises and strongest of asshouran (ces?)ces---- of the Public Officers to the contrary made, particularly last winter your Petitioners in compliance with a pressing Reguisition from His Excellency the Commander in Chief, and upon the most Solemn engagements of the Gentlemen employed to purchase (end of page one)
