[edit] DescriptionReading Eagle newspaper article covering the anticipated commutation of the death sentence for Lazarus Schonour published 19 Sep 1912. [edit] Text of ArticleSCHONOUR CLAIMS HE WILL NOT BE HANGED Says There Is No Necessity to Prepare for the End - His Fate Depends on Report on Alienist. At the session of the State Board of Pardons on Wednesday, in which application was made for commutation to life imprisonment of the death sentence or Lazarus Schonour for the murder of his neighbor, Charles H. Reisch, in Cumru Township, the board decided to employ an alienist to examine into Schonour's mental condition, the plea being made that he is insane. T. K. Leidy and Paul H. Price, who appeared before the board in Scohonour's behalf, are much encouraged with the prospect of saving their client from the gallows. The date of Schonour’s execution was fixed for Tuesday, Sept. 24. In view at the turn of affairs on Wednesday, the State Board decided to grant another respite and this is expected in a few days. The alienist will likely visit the murderer within the next week or so and will probably submit a report at the next meeting of the board, to be held on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Upon this report will depend his fate. His counsel submitted to the board the sworn statement of Dr. Fremont W. Frankhouser, this city, in which he stated that Schonour is afflicted with a hardening of the eyes and will soon be totally blind. Before going to Harrisburg, Messrs. Leidy and Price had an interview with their client. They told him of the seriousness of his predicament but it seemed to have no effect on him. Asked whether he was prepared for the end he stated that it was not necessary to make any preparation, as he would not be hanged. Sheriff Werley has read the death warrant to him and explained its significance, but Schonour paid little or no attention to him. [edit] SourceReading Eagle article as reproduced in GoogleNews.
