Schonour, well known throughout Berks and Lebanon counties, and one of the oldest citizens of Womelsdorf, died on Friday evening of general debility, aged 83 years, 8 months and 3 days. He is survived by his wife, Anna M. (nee Hare), and two sons, Thomas M. and Marx H., the former a student at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and the latter a student at Mereersburg Academy. Funeral from his residence, on High street, Womelsdorf, on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services at the house. Interment in the Union cemetery. He was born in Brecknock township March 15, 1827. He learned tailoring in the village of Sinking Spring, serving an apprenticeship of seven years, after which he was employed in a general store at the same place. He next engaged in the wholesale liquor business, associating With John H. Sell, under the firm name of Sell & Schonour. He was engaged in this business successfully for 42 years. in 1898 he retired and sold out his store to A. M. Young, who is still doing a good business at the old stand. Since his retirement from active business Mr. Schonour has lived at his residence in Womelsdorf, which is one of the finest in the town. Mr. Schonour was the owner of a large amount of other real estate. He was a member of Williamson Lodge, No. 307, F. and A.M.; Golden Rule Lodge, No. 159. I.O.F., and Neversink Council, No. 127, O.U.A.M., all of Womelsdorf. He was a director of the Keystone National bank of Reading; president of the Union Cemetery Company, Womelsdorf, and president of the Womelsdorf Union bank, filling the last-named position since its organization. He was a member of the Knights Templar, Chapter and Shrine. He served three terms as school director and four terms as councilman of that borough, having been president of the latter body for a number of terms. He was at one time prominent in Republican politics in this county. He was a son of John and Susanna (Marks) Schonour, late of Brecknock township. Deceased was twice married. His first wife, Sarah Schonour died many years ago. On October 25, 1899, he was united in marriage with Anna M. Hare, of Cornwall, who survives.
