Letters To the Editor (Probably The Spencerville Journal), May 1997, by Mary B. (Crider) Spicer: Dear Editor, Doris Corilla Reynolds and Mary Belle Crider were born north of Spencerville in the 1920's, were and have been inseparable playmates, classmates, friends. We walked on a stone road to attend the small one-room Book school where we learned our basic 3 R's. We absorbed more as we listened to the upper classmen recite their lessons at the front of the room. We enjoyed our camaraderie and lifelong friendships were cemented with the families of the Reynolds, Crider, Lauer, Wisher, Wolford, Fronk and Point. We shared many delicious meals with each other's families. There were jokes and family secrets divulged around those tables. Those were the Good Old Days. We never cared for our middle names, so when we phoned or wrote, it was usually "Hi, Doris C" or Hello, Mary B." I introduced Doris to Murray Griffin in 1941 at the Rhodes Restaurant in Mendon. This ignited the spark that culminated in their wedding on July 3, 1942. The nuptials were performed by the late Reverend Tennyson Guyer, in Celina. I was pleased to act as maid of honor while Murray's brother, Blaine, served as best man. The Griffins raised three lovely daughters, while we were blessed with two fine sons. We shared many laughs, and a few tears, while rearing our families. Now, we reach the final chaper. You no longer need endure the debilitating disease which you suffered so many years with such stoic fortitude. I never heard you complain. May God bless and keep you, Doris C. Dear friend, I shed tears for you now but you will always hold a special place in my memory. I shall miss you. This verse by an unknown author says it all better than I. "Beautiful memories are wonderful things, They last to the longest day. They never wear out, They never get lost, And can never be given away." Mary B. Spicer
