[edit] DescriptionView of Ephrata, Pennsylvania (Lancaster County) in 1887 drawn & published by T. M. Fowler. [edit] DetailsThis panoramic print map of Ephrata, Pennsylvania was drawn and published by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler in 1887. Ephrata was settled in the early 1700's and became a stop along the Philadelphia and Paxtang road. The community maintained as an agricultural center and mill town during its early years. On the summit, east of Ephrata was a mineral spring that became so popular that people came from far and near to cure their ailments. The summer resort, Mountain Spring Resort, was built at that location in 1848 and expanded later to include an observatory, which collapsed the year after this map’s publishing. The Reading & Columbia Railroad began serving the town in 1854. Ephrata prospered as the mountain resort became more popular in the late 1800's. By 1887, Ephrata had a shoe manufactory, a coach manufactory, two brick yards and twenty-four cigar manufactories. The image does show significant damage along the top margin, but it does not detract from its charm. The map from 1887 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes. It features inset illustrations of the following: • Residence of John Seldomridge. • Ephrata National Bank. • Residence of F. W. Hull. • Residence & Printing Office of Chas. S. Yeager. • Residence of J. R. Messner. • Drug Store & Residence of G. S.
