Elizabeth Patton1788 - 1860

Description

Exceptional and important 19th century oil on canvas portrait of Elizabeth Patton-Crockett, wife of the Famous American Icon David "Davy" Crocket & a once prominent member of an important and influential family in the Swannanoa Area of Asheville, NC. This portrait was discovered in the attic of the now razed Patton Home by a direct descendant of the Patton's, and last heir to reside in the Patton Home before it was torn down. This painting originally hung in the library of the Patton Home since the early 1800's - Until it was placed in the attic upon renovation of the home sometime in the last 40-50 years. Painting when auctioned was in as-found, untouched condition and was being offered for sale on the open market for the first time since it's discovery in 2014. Mrs. Crockett is shown wearing all black mourning clothes and exhibiting a somber yet strong gaze. Original Early Stretcher - Frame appears to be original with some older restoration to Gesso Leaves and Flowers. Painting 29" tall x 24" wide - w/frame 47" tall x 33 1/4" wide.
