Article Text

A NEGLECTED GRAVE
The Burial Place of the Wife of Gov. John Sevier.
Russellville, Ala., Aug. 12 - Throughout Tennessee it is not generally known to the present generation that Mrs. Catherine Sevier, wife of Gov. John Sevier, either the first or one of the first governors of Tennessee, sleeps quietly in the cemetery at the head of Jackson street, in this city. The grave is marked by an humble head-stone, which bears the following inscription:

CATHERINE SEVIER

wife of
GOV. JOHN SEVIER
of Tennessee,
Died
October 7, 1836,
Aged

82 Years.
The grave is surrounded by crumbling walls, made of white lime. In the center of the inclosure stands a tall and stately young oak tree, which has evidently been there for years. Gov. Sevier died in September, 1815, and Mrs. Catherine Sevier moved to Overton county, Tenn., where she resided with her son, Dr. Samuel Sevier. Later she removed to Russellville, Ala., where she spent the remainder of her days. The cemetery where the remains of the wife of Tennessee's once honored son rest is a quiet and neglected spot. It is surrounded by no inclosure, and left for a stamping ground for the beast that runs at large on the commons. Some enterprising and patriotic citizens of Tennessee and Alabama should inaugurate some plan by which a fund could be raised to place a monument at the head of the grave of Mrs. Sevier befitting the honor and dignity of the man's name she bore.
