The Black Coat, Cherokee Man. The inherent dignity, character, and courage of the southeastern Indians shine through in this portrait by George Catlin. He made the paintings at Fort Gibson, the U.S. Army military center for the Indian Territories, in the mid-1830s when the subjects of his art were enduring a wretched existence in their unfamiliar prairie home. Image from the book, Tribes of the Southern Woodlands by Roberta Conlan, page 127.
