Quick reference

Source page titles are formatted depending on the nature of the source.

  • Government and church records are titled Source:PlaceCovered. RecordCollectionName
  • Newspapers are titled Source:NewspaperName (PlaceIssued)
  • Periodicals are titled Source:PeriodicalName (Publisher)
  • Other sources with an author are titled Source:AuthorSurname, AuthorGivenName. SourceTitle
  • Other sources without an author are titled Source:SourceTitle
Articles (such as "a" and "the") at the beginning of a SourceTitle are excluded. If a source has both a title and a subtitle, the subtitle is excluded from the page title.

Further information

Take care when adding a source

WeRelate automatically creates the source page title based on the information you select/enter when you add a source. For this reason, it is important to enter information correctly and completely when you add a source.

  • Be sure to select the correct type of source in the dropdown.
  • For government and church records, enter the record collection name in the Title field and fill in the Place covered field.
  • For newspapers, enter the newspaper name in the Title field and fill in the Place issued field.
  • For periodicals, enter the periodical title and publisher information in the Title field. This is because WeRelate does not (yet) automatically include the information you enter in the Publisher field in the source page title.
  • For all other types of sources with an author, be sure to enter the surname and given name(s) of the first author when you are adding the source. Enter them in Surname, GivenName(s) order, including the comma after the surname.
  • Enter the complete source title, excluding the subtitle.
  • For Place covered or Place issued, enter the place name from smallest jurisdiction (e.g., city) to largest jurisdiction (e.g., country). These place names follow the same rules as place page titles.

When WeRelate creates the source page title, it automatically capitalizes the author's name and non-trivial words in the source title, so you don't need to worry about capitalization when adding a source (although you will want to ensure that the author's name and source title are appropriately capitalized when editing the source page). WeRelate also automatically removes articles (e.g., "a", "the") from the beginning of source titles when generating the source page title.

If source information was not correctly entered when adding a source, you may wish to rename the page following the rules given under Quick reference above.

Possible duplicate source page titles

The rules listed under Quick reference may lead to two different sources having the same source page title - for example, if one is a revised edition of the other. If you do not notice this when you attempt to add the second source, WeRelate will take you into edit mode on the existing source page. If this happens, use the back arrow to go back to adding the source, and add a disambiguation string (e.g., "2nd edition" or the publication date of the revised edition) in parentheses after the source title - for example "My Favorite Genealogical Book (1993 edition)".

  • Note, however, that an exact reprint (which is common with genealogical books) should not be created as a separate source. See Source conventions for more information.
