Family talk:William Wodell and Mary Unknown (2)

Children instead by an earlier unknown wife? [21 November 2015]

Ancestral Lines says that all of William Wodell's children were by an unknown, earlier wife, and that the wife Mary mentioned in Wodell's will was actually first his daughter in law Mary Tripp Wodell who had married his dead son Gershom. There seems to be only one wife named Mary, and that was her. Any one else know the truth? I haven't read much on the Wodells.--Daniel Maxwell 21:44, 4 August 2013 (EDT)

Yes, I noticed that. But some of the records of Austin's seem to be done later, and I have seen some that are suspect for other reasons (for instance, it has 'births' recorded in Little Compton before the town was founded. These dates appear to just be taken from the cemetery gravestone dates) Boyer notes these births but doesn't mention this discrepancy. Wodell definitely married his daughter in law though, because this caused him legal problems. The answer to this then is that there might very well be two wives named Mary. I don't know enough about where Austin got his material to really comment further. Daniel Maxwell 15:18, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
Well, so if "there might very well be two wives named Mary", that seems to contradict "There seems to be only one wife named Mary"? What is Ancestral Lines? of Dawes Gates? of Tingley? of whom? page number? I am trying to find your reference and haven't yet. In unproven situations, collaboration suggests you should try and lead the reader to the same conclusion. Imagine you are a reader who always believed Mary is correct (which is certainly the traditional and probably consensus view). Very frustrating to not understand why the change was made, --Jrich 15:31, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
"Ancestral Lines: 206 Families in England, Wales, the Netherlands, Germany, New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania" is a work by genealogist Carl Boyer, he's done 3 editions with updates of it over the last 40 years, the one I am using is from 1998. It is useful because he covered some Rhode Island families that either had no or poor coverage (ie the Anthony family). He also quotes the records that concern Wodell's legal trouble with the Friends for having married Gershom Wodell's wife (ie his daughter in law). Wodell is covered on pages 693 and 694 in said work. I realized that it was probably a mistake to rename this family 'unknown' (though I dont apologize for adding wife Mary Tripp) and so I moved on to finishing the less troubling Coggeshall family cleanup. If you want to see some snippets of the work, look at it on Amazon. Its also available at FHCs on their computers (but not directly on FS if not at a FHC). An article in the Great Migration Newsletter, Vol. 4, p. 14, says the Portsmouth records appear to have been copied into the book about 1685, as all entries prior to that appear written in one hand. Presumably they are based on older records. Since Mary (Tripp) Wodell m. Jonathan Gatchell in 1682/3 and had two children, that would appear to suggest this happened before she married William Wodell, hence one would have a hard time arguing that they influenced the name of the mother recorded in those records. --Jrich 17:12, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
Alright then that suggests that there are two Mary Wodells, Mary (_____) Wodell and Mary (Tripp) (Gatchell) Wodell. I stopped further editing on this family after I realized this, to see if I could find some other documentation or discussion about it. Coggeshall (previously missing a generation) is now cleaned up so I should have time for this later in the weekend. Daniel Maxwell 17:18, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
