In hopes of finding a birth record for Austen or Alfred in Hulme, today I searched the first item of FHL film #93601 (Hulme [Lancashire, England] parish register transcripts, abt. 1500-1800). I found the following entries of potential (but unlikely) interest:

Searching for Birth Records for Children [8 April 2009]

Yesterday and today I searched 1828-1842 in the parish register for St. George church in Hulme. The films were FHL#1545653 and FHL#2113127, the first of which is the original register, and the second of which is the copy kept at Manchester. It was a little while before I realized that they were showing me the exact same information, but oh well :-)

I looked at baptisms only, even though there were burials as well in the original register. I looked for Austen around 1830, Alfred around 1835, and Joseph around 1838. Looking for Alfred was sort of superfluous since we have a copy of his baptism record from Manchester already. Anyway, I found no sign of Austen nor Joseph. I thought it was a good idea to search beyond the actual years of birth since I saw some examples of baptisms occurring quite a few years after the child's birth.

A possible lead: IGI lists an Austin Williams born at "Saint Stephen, Salford, , Lancashire, England" on 17 Oct 1830. It's in the same county as Hulme and Manchester, and the parents are Wm Williams and Maria (Maria being a second given name of William Williams' wife). Who knows.

What should we do next?--JoshHansen 21:41, 8 April 2009 (EDT)
