The large town you mention is BARNSTAPLE with a "p". Bishop's Tawton is another parish near Barnstaple, close to the north coast of Devon. Bishop's Tawton has no link to Totnes which is on the south coast of Devon (getting on for 100 miles away).

You do not have to give the census as a source for every individual fact you glean from it. Once is sufficient.
