[add comment] [edit] I'm Confused [16 May 2011]I don't have access to the De Zetter genealogy of Talcot Foster. Despite the fact that it is (apparently) a central New York family, the New York State Library does have a copy and the nearest library which does is in Michigan. Eglin Hatherly was married three times: (1) ----- Downe; (2) Jeffrey Hanford by whom she had the five children who came from Devonshire to New England; and (3) Richard Sillis of Scituate. There is no indication of a marriage to anyone named Foster [various sketches in The Great Migration Begins and The Great Migration series, primarily that of Eglin Hanford, TGM, III:205-207]. One of her daughters, Lettice Hanford (not Foster) married as her first husband, Edward Foster of Scituate [sketch of Edward Foster in The Great Migration Begins, I:690-692]. That sketch indicates that Edward was probably born about 1610, based on the date of their marriage, but provides no information as to his place or family of origin. In the comments to that sketch, Robert Charles Anderson adds that "The marriage in Plymouth on 11 October 1639 of Samuel Tompkins and Lettis Foster is suggestive, but no relation with Edward Foster or his wife is evident." (and he cites Plymouth Colony Records, 1:134, apparently for that marriage record). Lacking additional information, it's reasonable at this point to detach Eglin Hatherly from Timothy Forster, replace her with "Unknown Unknown" but leave Timothy Forster as the purported father of Edward Foster pending additional information.--Jaques1724 12:57, 16 May 2011 (EDT) |
