Family talk:Samuel Hinckley and Mary Freeman (1)

Extra children? Just noting some inconsistencies [16 July 2009]

Given that mother Mary Freeman is shown dying in 1717, it would appear that Person:Mehitable Hinckley (2), Person:Experience Hinckley (1) and Person:Isaac Hinckley (1) either belong to a different wife, or Mary did not die in 1717.

I have a vague idea from a better source that there are two wives (both named Mary) involved with Samuel Hinckley, but need to track down the details before adding.-Brenda--kennebec1 09:08, 15 July 2009 (EDT)
There are an awful lot of Hinckleys, and Samuel Hinckleys in particular. A Samuel Hinckley m. 1664 Mary Goodspeed who d. 1666, then m. 1668 Mary "Fittrandle". Obviously a different Samuel. I have remote connections to both sides of this marriage, but have researched no closer than their parents away, so haven't really studied them yet. I am slowly going through my sources and hope to figure out more, but it will be tricky... --Jrich 09:23, 15 July 2009 (EDT)
Some sources do mention a second wife for "this" Samuel Hinckly named Mary Demond (History of Lewiston by Janus Elder, for example, but seems to originate with Hinckley:Heritage & History by E.Charles Hinckley). No date or authority is given, but they have the wrong death date for Mary (Freeman) Hinckley (see below). --Jrich 11:32, 15 July 2009 (EDT)
I can find nothing so far on Mary Demond, but wonder if Demond might be the phonetic spelling of a town clerk who was hard of hearing, i.e., Freeman but completely mangled? Source:The Levy story : some descendants of David Levy, revolutionary soldier of Frederick, Maryland : a genealogy of Levy, Hinkley, Kinsey, Etchison, Bush, Blaho, Istvan, p. 334, says "Nor could we verify a second supposed marriage to a Mary Demond...". --Jrich 23:43, 15 July 2009 (EDT)

It would appear that Person:Mary Hinckley (5) and Person:William Hinckley (1) do not belong in this family. Mary shows a christening in Truro in 1724 when this family would appear to have been in Maine, plus there are lots of Hinckley families in Truro for her to belong to. At the very least, her birth date is wrong, since the Mary that was born in 1710/11 died a month later, so any Mary that lived until 1759 would have to have been born after this date, but Feb 1711 (I assume this means Feb 1711/12 to come after the Mary that died) would have only left a bare 9 months before Edmond's birth in Nov 1712. William says he was b. 1734 in Mass., but the family was in Maine then. He is 8 years after the previous child, so I would again suspect he is in the wrong family.

I also think that William is in the wrong family, but didn't have details to change him elsewhere so decided to leave him for now...(on the theory that maybe someone knew more than I did...) Again, I have a vague idea that one of the Samuels returned to Mass from Maine, but without better documentation, there are a LOT of potential errors in this family.-Brenda--kennebec1 09:08, 15 July 2009 (EDT)

Gideon is missing. --Jrich 23:44, 14 July 2009 (EDT)

Yes, he is, and I'll add him, tho I thought I might seek a more primary/reliable source before adding...-Brenda--kennebec1 09:08, 15 July 2009 (EDT)
History of Brunswick, et al, by George Wheeler, shows Gideon Hinckley as a land owner in 1739, which implies a birth by 1718 which leaves only a small window about half way between Aaron in late 1715 and Mehitable in late 1718 for his birth if he is part of this family. If so, this would seem to imply a birth in Truro. Also in the list of landowners from 1739 is an Edward whom doesn't appear to belong to this family so there could be another Hinckley family in the area. Aaron, Edmund, Dea. Samuel, Samuel, Jr, Seth and Shubael from this family are in the list, the presence of Edmund notably making it clear the aforementioned Edward is not simply a variation of Edmund. --Jrich 11:32, 15 July 2009 (EDT)

P.S. The Source:Genealogical and family history of the state of Maine source gives marriage as April 1710, but they had 2 children born before that date, suggesting this is not correct. --Jrich 23:50, 14 July 2009 (EDT)

Yup.
Thank you so much for tracking and alerting to these inconsistencies! There are some good sources for Hinckleys in Maine (in fact, the book "Hinckleys in Maine" is supposed to be pretty good), but I didn't have that available when I was making updates last night. I knew this was not a primary or very reliable source, but it gave some basic info to families that had been kind of empty, so I was using it to at least provide some kind of source.
It is excellent to have someone else's eye to watch for these things that when one is tired, and working in kind of a mechanical update mode! This is one of the GREAT BENEFITS of werelate. -Brenda--kennebec1 09:08, 15 July 2009 (EDT)
Mayflower Births & Deaths, p. 227, usually a good summary of research as it stood on the date of publication, says children are Seth, Shubael, Samuel and Mary (twins), Edmund, Reliance, Aaron, Mehitable, Experience, Mary and Isaac (twins). The second Mary is shown marrying a Joseph Thompson. No indication that mother Mary died in 1717. --Jrich 09:36, 15 July 2009 (EDT)
Mayflower Descendant, in an article entitled "Settlement of Lieut. Edmund Freeman's Estate, and the Will and Inventory of His Widow Sarah", p. 8:65 (April, 1906), says Mary Hinckly was mentioned in division of her father's estate 12 Feb 1718/19, and again in mother's will of 26 May 1736/37. According to several sources, the Freeman Genealogy shows that Edmund Freeman died 10 Dec 1717, which is the death date show for Mary on these pages, and so the assertion of Mary's death on this date appears incorrect. --Jrich 10:12, 15 July 2009 (EDT)
