Sources - Problem in Understanding why WeRelate deletes new ones. [12 December 2011]

I am having trouble with learning WeRelate. I add new names or sources, save them, then find they are not as I entered them. Sometimes they are totally lost. I want middle names and it confuses me by allowing them in a persons page, but then only shows the name without the middle name at other times. That is not good. It is frustrating. It results in my double entries as I do them over, thinking the first time was lost...and it wasn't.

This is not only confusing, but tends to turn away from WeRelate. It seems so difficult, wasting time. It may not be worth it to me, and I have much content to add. While trying to enter a second source tonight, I saved it, only to find it deleted the first source. Not good.

If a discussion can be started to help clear the clouds away, perhaps some proficiency can be gained here.

Thanks for reading this.

One of the things that a "wiki" requires is that each page have a unique title. WeRelate's policy is that page titles for people have the person's first name, their surname, and an "id number" to make the title unique. Middle names don't appear in page titles because sometimes you don't know a person's middle name, and we didn't want to make people rename their page titles when they found someone's middle name. But, middle names do appear as part of the name on the page itself, in search results as soon as the page is indexed, in gedcom exports, etc. For example, David Peery's middle name appears prominently on his wiki page.

Each source also has it's own wiki page. For example, you created Source:Higginbotham, Jay. Family Biographies. This is a great source. You can re-use this source, referencing it from multiple person pages, like a "master source" in a desktop genealogy program. WeRelate shouldn't be deleting your sources. If you select "Contributions" from the "MyRelate" menu, you can see a list of all changes you have made. I'm not sure if this answers your second question. If it doesn't, please give me more information.--Dallan 17:00, 12 December 2011 (EST)
