Family talk:Klaas Groelfsema and Geertruid Steenhuizen (1)

From Klaas Groefsema and Geertruid Jelmers (1): Duplicate? [29 May 2020]

Hi

I feel that this couple is probably identical to Family:Klaas Groelfsema and Geertruid Steenhuizen (1), based on names, approx birth years and place where their children were born. Can someone who understands Dutch records better than I review and either merge them or indicate why you think they might not be the same? Thanks

BTW: I found that birth and marriage records for at least 4 children born in the 1820's (Bouke, Roelf, Jelmer, Hilje) give the mother's name as Geertruid Jelmers, while Jakob's 1837 record adds Steenhuizen to her name. I don't know what the implication of this is.--DataAnalyst 23:47, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

That's a well-known artefact of the 1811 surname-taking process especially in Friesland and Groningen. Men were required to take surnames, and women whose fathers did not themselves take surnames were allowed but not required to take the surnames of their brothers. The interesting question is whether her death record uses the surname, in which case the convention is to name her page with the surname.
And yes, those two couples do look very much the same. Good catch. I'll add some sources and then do the merge.
