Family talk:Jonathan Herrick and Mary Dodge (1)

rename [31 July 2013]

This was renamed from Jonathan Herrick and Mary Cleaves, both "of Wenham" with no other dates or details given. This appears to come from The Crafts Family, by William F. Crafts, which on p. 172 says Francis Crafts m. (2) 1775 "Esther Herrick, daughter of Deacon Jonathan and Mary (Cleaves) Herrick of Wenham. She was born 20 Jan., 1743...". There is no sign of such a family in the Wenham VRs, and the birth of Esther in 1743 occurs in Manchester, as does the marriage, so it is unclear why it should be thought there is any connection to Wenham. There doesn't appear to be any other source mentioning the marriage of a Jonathan Herrick to a Mary Cleaves, and several sources, e.g., the Herrick Genealogy, list Esther as a daughter of Jonathan Herrick and Mary Dodge, and several of the other children of this couple, notably their son Jonathan, end up in Manchester where Jonathan was a deacon. So we must conclude that Crafts did a very superficial job of researching this family and was wrong. --Jrich 15:08, 31 July 2013 (EDT)
