Family talk:John Smalley and Ann Walden (1)

other marriage? [20 March 2009]

Many sources list the wife of John Smalley as Ann Walden, however the following record seems to contradict that information:

Scituate and Barnstable Church Records (as recorded) Isaac and Marye Twinnes, children of John Smallee of Nosett and Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Huggins baptized February 27, 1647

[The above comment added in the Family History to question marriage to Ann Walden, moved here. --Jrich 10:38, 20 March 2009 (EDT)]]
The interpretation being presented here is the result of a mis-parsing of this record. This is the baptism of 3 children coming from two families. In Dec 1647, John Smalley had twins Isaac and Mary, being baptized here on 27 Feb 1647/8 (wife not named in birth record, nor here in baptism record). Also baptized the same day is Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas Huggins.
Originally, I pointed out that the original interpretation did not "contradict" the marriage to Ann Walden, which is, after all, documented. It only suggested a second marriage or similar explanation. But after inspecting this record in its full context, Source:The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, p. 9:283, I realized that it had been mis-parsed, and does not even suggest that. --Jrich 10:38, 20 March 2009 (EDT)
