Family talk:James Trowbridge and Margaret Jackson (4)

Source for marriage date? [26 October 2009]

There are lots of genealogies and secondary sources happy to quote a marriage date of 30 Jan 1674. It does not come from the VR Newton, Cambridge or Dorchester as far as I can ascertain. However, VR Newton does list the death of Dea. John Jackson (Margaret's father) on 30 Jan 1674-5. This suggests to me that the marriage date should actually be before 30 Jan 1674/75 (i.e., known to be married before her father died) and somewhere this qualifier was lost. James Trowbridge is clearly mentioned as a son-in-law in probate documents, so the marriage is not in question, but the date needs justification. --Jrich 11:23, 26 October 2009 (EDT)

Looking at the John Jackson sketch in Parker-Ruggles (269-79), it appears that Deacon John Jackson died intestate and that the first mention of James Trowbridge as a son-in-law is the agreement among the Jackson children as to the division of the estate which was signed on 20 December 1676 and presented in court 3 April 1677. The birth of the first child (Experience) of James Trowbridge and Margaret Jackson given in the Newton VR although without a date. The Trowbridge genealogy gives it as 1 November 1675 which is (barely) consistent with a marriage taking place 30 January 1674/75 and 21 months after the marriage if it took place 30 January 1673/74. The first wife having died 17 August 1672 (per both Cambridge and Newton VR) the second marriage could have taken place either year. All that being said, is there any documented mention of James Trowbridge as husband of Margaret Jackson earlier than the 20 December 1676 estate settlement?--jaques1724 00:46, 23 November 2011 (EST)
