Family talk:James McClure and Isabella Unknown (1)

Hi there, it's fun to discover other McClure researchers! What are your lines? Mine goes through Andrew, the son of James and Isabella. I notice that there is now a marriage date for James McClure and Isabella... but I doubt that they were married that early, considering that Andrew was born in 1795. Is there a source for this marriage date?

---

Hi Nora, the marriage date appears to be for the other James McClure, who married Mary Espy, according to a familysearch submission. I don't have a line to this McClure family, I have families in Augusta County that married into the McClure's there.

After looking through what I could find online of the Paxtang Church records and Dauphin County records, it appears that James McClure (1733-1805) married Mary Espy (23 DEC 1760 according to a Familysearch submission (but she would have been just under age 16)), but some researchers have seemed to confuse the other one that married Isabella.

Do you have any concrete sources that we can correct these families?

Best regards,

Jim:)

Hi Jim, (is that right: Jim?),

Well, I did a bit of research on this several years ago, and in my notes SOMEWHERE I have some info about the James McClure who married Mary Espy, and who went north to the Wyoming Valley, I think it was, in the general timeframe of the Revolution, and was believed to have died up there. I saw some article somewhere, which I think I have in my notes, where someone had tried to sort out the two James McClures, and who pointed out that Mary Espy, the widow of James McClure, WAS a widow with children after his death, and that her husband James McClure had never returned home to her. At least that's how I remember it.

I'm hoping in the next couple of months to come across that article as I actively sort through my notes, which I'm in the process of doing now.

The best I can do for now is to say that I have spent a TON of time in looking at all of this over the years, relatively speaking, and that I've never found anything, zippo, nada, that can connect the James McClure of Hanover Township (husband of Isabella) to James McClure of Paxtang Township (husband of Mary Espy).

I have several things in my notes that I think might connect James McClure of Hanover Township to John McClure of Hanover Township -- I mean, that John was the father of James, as some of the old genealogies suggest. When I come across all of that too I'll put up whatever I have.

I have some deeds involving James and Francis (his son? brother?) and John, I'm pretty sure.

I do have something in my notes, which I think is no more than someone's speculation, that James might have been married earlier to a Margaret, before he married Isabella.

The James McClure in Hanover Twp did seem to have been born circa 1733 and he would have to have been a bit older than Isabella, and might have been married previously.

That's the best I can do for now.

Nora

Jim,

Thanks for taking care of the marriage date. For whatever it's worth, I think it will turn out that Isabella was born after 1743, considering that her youngest son, Andrew, was born in 1795. But I don't know what to do with that at this point, and I'm okay with leaving it there for now if you'd like to. Or you can feel free to do an estimate; I don't have time to put any brainpower against it today.  :)

Hi Nora, I believe I've found good sources for James McClure that married Mary Espy. Check out his page, I think it's pretty credible, especially since the DAR Chapter is named after his family:

I've update his family page and some of his children. Clearly this is not the James McClure that married Isabella.

Best regards,

Jim:)
