jacob karsten [29 March 2012]

Okay, a great change this your Jacob Karsten:

Geboorteakte Ooststellingwerf, 1877 Aangiftedatum 28 december 1877, akte nr. 319 Jacob Kromkamp, geboren 26 december 1877 Zoon van Albert Pieters Kromkamp en Jantje Karst Karsten

In the marriages of Michigan I found 2 more Karsten with a father A (Albert) On findagrave.com I found Albert P Karsten 1829-1916 and his wife Jante K Karsten (1831-1883) 1 of the other Karstens (Margaret) was born in Vriesland, Holland,

so I searched for Karsten in Friesland and found this 1.

btw the daughter Margaret seemed to be born in 1870:

Geboorteakte Ooststellingwerf, 1870
Aangiftedatum 19 april 1870, akte nr. 110
Grietje Kromkamp, geboren 17 april 1870
Dochter van Albert Pieters Kromkamp en Jantje Karstes Karsten

Huwelijksakte Ooststellingwerf, 1859
Man   : Albert Pieters Kroemkamp, oud 30 jaar, geboren te Oosterwolde
Ouders: Pieter Alberts Kroemkamp en Pietertje Alberts Feddes
Vrouw : Jantje Karsten Karsten, oud 26 jaar, geboren te Oosterwolde
Ouders: Karste Jacobs Karsten en Grietje Geerts Veenhof

I saw Hendrikje Schans coming from Smilde, well Oosterwolde - Smilde is just a few miles --henk 03:39, 29 March 2012 (EDT)

btw I added a gedcom with some data :-)--henk 04:17, 29 March 2012 (EDT)

Many thanks! Let me see if I understand. So Jacob formed his Americanized name by taking his mother's last name? --Pkeegstra 07:12, 29 March 2012 (EDT)

well,I think his father already did and I can imagine: Americans have some problems with our pronounciation :-)--henk 08:35, 29 March 2012 (EDT)

Ah, that makes sense. So Jacob didn't come over by himself, for sure his parents also came.

I think the family immigrated in 1881--henk 09:35, 29 March 2012 (EDT)

OK, so Jacob was the youngest and would have been 4 then. BTW, I believe the suggested WeRelate practice is to name that whole generation Kroemkamp, since that's what their birth registry says. That's what I did for my Wiersmas, who were born as Koens and took the name Wiersma from their stepfather. --Pkeegstra 09:44, 29 March 2012 (EDT)

of course you're correct, sorry --henk 09:54, 29 March 2012 (EDT)

My gut feeling from seeing these names my whole life is that Margaret/Grietje's husband's last name is Kooiman. The marriage registry transcriptions can be bad, even though they're usually a lot better than the census transcriptions. --Pkeegstra 17:01, 29 March 2012 (EDT)
