Family talk:Eli Ropp and Catherine Cline (1)

Hoping to locate information that determines parentage/identity of Eli and Catherine Ropp [17 January 2013]

It is possible more than one Eli Ropp appears in the Ohio census at about the same time. I am interested in the Eli and Catherine who settled at Seneca County, Ohio and had children Sarah J., Daniel, Emanuel and Houston/Hueston.

There are traces about an Eli Ropp of Stark County, Ohio, but the Eli and Catherine I've interested in married 1848 at Richland County, Ohio (Eli Ropp and Catherine Cline). In the census of 1850, as Eli and Catherine Roup, the couple I'm interested in were residing one door down from George and Sarah (---) Cline at Bloominggrove, Richland County.

"Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-1994," index and images, FamilySearch ([link removed because WeRelate does not allow me to post a link to another website] : accessed 17 Jan 2013), Elias Ropp and Catherine Cline, 1848; citing reference vol 2, p118, FHL microfilm 388735. Note: There are actually two entries for this marriage.

1850 U.S. census, Richland County, Ohio, population schedule, Blooming Grove Township, page 172 (stamped), dwelling 237, family 237, Eli Roup household, 19 September 1850; digital image, Ancestry.com ([link removed because WeRelate does not allow me to post a link to another website] : accessed 2 May 2008), citing National Archives microfilm publication M432, roll 724. My transcription follows:

Roup, Eli ae 26, M, occ: farmer, RE -0-, b. PA

" Catherine, ae 20, F, b. OH

Transcription of the family one door up:

Cline, George ae 54, M, occ: farmer, RE 4000, b. PA

" Sarah, ae 42, F, b. OH
" David, ae 18, M, occ: farmer, b. OH, attends school
" Dianah, ae 15, F, b. OH
" Daniel, ae 13, M, b. OH, attends school
" Alfred, ae 6, M, b. OH, attends school
" Sarah, ae 3, F, b. OH

Although time and circumstance led to my interest in the family residing at Seneca County, the names of the first two known children are also interesting. Catherine (Cline) Roup/Roop's mother's name was Sarah; Catherine had a brother Daniel Cline; she had another brother, David.

George and Sarah (---) Cline both died between 1850 and 1860. I believe Sarah is the Sarah Cline reported in the 1860 U.S. census mortality schedule; George died earlier. I've started to pull the probate records about George from the Richland County probate record (on FamilySearch; unindexed).--GeneJ 20:38, 16 January 2013 (EST)
