From Edward Bates and Elizabeth Shaw (2): Details and source needed [19 February 2012]

I am removing Elizabeth Shaw from this page. She had daughter in 1674 as wife of Joseph Poole who d. 1706 and she then married Peter Holbrook and Richard Weare/Ware. Her father's estate is divided amongst his heirs including Joseph Poole and his wife Elizabeth. So this Elizabeth is not the one who married Edward Bates.

This page has no sources, no dates or parents for Edward Bates, no children, nothing to tell us about this alleged marriage. Chamberlain in History of Weymouth, p. 3:23 (the Bates family section says it was compiled by Walter L. Bates), says Edward Bates m. Elizabeth Shaw, d/o Dea. John Shaw. Now on p. 4:613, the person that Chamberlain calls Deacon John Shaw was born about 1653 and could not be the father of somebody married in 1675 as this page says. The earlier John Shaw, on p. 4:612, is the one whose probate documents name Joseph Poole and his wife Elizabeth as heirs. So no John Shaw is shown having a daughter Elizabeth who married Edward Bates. No marriage record is found in Weymouth for Edward Bates, though there are some birth records for Edward and Elizabeth Bates.

So while it appears Edward Bates had a wife named Elizabeth, it could not have been Elizabeth Shaw. --Jrich 14:20, 19 February 2012 (EST)
