Family talk:Ebenezer King and Hannah Manning (1)

Watchers

2 different families? [31 May 2012]

The marriage record of Hannah Manning identifies her husband as Ebenezer King of Watertown. In Watertown, we find the following children born to Ebenezer and Hannah King:

  • Ebenezer b. 11 Oct 1700
  • Samuel b. 13 Apr 1702
  • William b. 8 Sep 1703
  • Hannah b. 13 Jan 1704/05

To this page is attached a son Benjamin born in Tiverton. In Tiverton, we find:

  • Mary b. 21 Oct 1704
  • Benjamin b. 9 Oct 1708
  • Hannah b. 15 Jun 1714
  • Ebenezer b. 23 May 1719

In Cambridge, we find:

  • Mary b. 25 Mar 1708
  • Mary b. 21 Oct 1709

In Cambridge, we also find the following deaths:

  • Ebenezer 28 Sep 1710
  • Mary 30 Sep 1709
  • William 9 Sep 1710

The death of William in Cambridge makes it clear the Cambridge and Watertown families are the same.

The births of Mary in Tiverton and Hannah in Watertown 3 months later makes it clear the Tiverton family is a different one. So Benjamin does not belong to this family.

It is probably the father of Benjamin that was the son of Clement since one source says he moved to Providence. The Ebenezer who married Hannah Manning was probably not the son of Clement. --Jrich 09:50, 30 May 2012 (EDT)

Source:Morrison, George Austin. King Genealogy : Clement King, of Marshfield, Mass., 1668, and His Descendants, p. 15, apparently didn't think anything strange in printing that Ebenezer King had children born in Watertown, then Mary b. 21 Oct 1704 at Tiverton and then 3 months later, Hannah b. 13 Jan 1704-5 at Watertown, then more at Tiverton. Apparently he thought nothing unusual in William b. 8 Sep 1703 marrying 1 Feb 1721/22 before he was of legal age. Of course, Cutter simply copied the data, and now it is all over the Internet.
Clement King bought land in Rhode Island in 1687. Clement's eldest son John was of Providence, RI. Clement's son James was of Providence, RI, later Gloucester, RI. Clement's son Thomas was of Providence. But Ebenezer was of Watertown? Apparently the fact that Ebenezer had a wife named Hannah was enough to convince the author that the Ebenezer King of Watertown who married Hannah Manning was the same man, when in actuality, he probably never left Rhode Island.
There is no evidence located yet, but Hannah Manning may have married in Watertown the Ebenezer King that was born posthumously to Ebenezer King and Mary Twells (sometimes written Twelves, Tweld, Tuell, d/o Robert Twells and Martha Brackett) of Braintree in 1677. --Jrich 20:54, 30 May 2012 (EDT)
Robert Twelves in his 1697 will named his daughter Mary Clark. Uriah Clark of Watertown, b. 1644, m. after the death of his first wife, a second wife Mary --- (per Descendants of Hugh Clark of Watertown), who died at or after giving birth 15 Jul 1700 but before Uriah remarried 21 Nov 1700 (per Watertown Records). If this wife Mary was indeed the widow Mary (Twells) King, that would make it very likely her son Ebenezer King was the Ebenezer King of Watertown. --Jrich 12:04, 31 May 2012 (EDT)
After considerable searching, I am going to create 2 Family pages, removing the husband and son Benjamin from this page and creating a new Ebenezer King and Hannah Unknown page, also adding the additional Tiverton children, and leaving the wife and eventually adding the Ebenezer King born in Braintree as husband with the Watertown and Cambridge children. It seems like there is sufficient circumstantial evidence to support this, and the current arrangement is clearly incorrect due to overlapping births. --Jrich 17:16, 31 May 2012 (EDT)
