Family talk:Benjamin Wheeler and Rhoda Rideout (1)

Watchers

Confusion [4 мая 2019]

1850 census shows Benjamin age 50 so born about 1800, and 1860 census shows Benjamin age 65 so born 1795, and Wheeler Family in America, p. 52, shows Benjamin b. 1790 having different children, Although it is in general an error-filled source, 1836 is very late for a man born 1790 to have his first child. Combined with the two marriage dates, there is clearly enough doubt to question the identification of the husband. The exact marriage record from Bucksport would be useful. More research and sources are necessary. --Jrich 16:44, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

Several problems were brought up by the previous post. Some have been resolved.

The Bucksport record has been located after hours of paging through images. As suspected, the events did not all occur in Bucksport and it was recorded very long afterwards with the concomitant loss of reliability. Here among a bunch of records added to the town records by copying from Bibles (the annotation at the bottom of the page saying "Recorded by Ja's B Parker Town Clerk Ap'l 11th 1865"):

Benjamin Wheeler born in Hollis N.H. Oct'r 16, 1790
Rhoda Rideout born in Hollis N.H. May 17 1799
Married at Hollis by Rev'd Eli Smith Jan'y 16, 1818
Children Merinda A born in Hollis N. H. Mar 1 1819
Benjamin born in Hollis N H July 12 1823
Elizabeth T. born in Hollis N H Feb'y 26 1825
Bainbridge born in Hollis N H Jan'y 9 1827
Louisa A born in Hollis N H Aug't 9 1829
Addie L born in Bucksport Oct'r 23 1836
Sallie J born in Bucksport Sept'r 6 1838
Emma S born in Bucksport June 28 1841
Maria H born in Bucksport June 1 1846

Also, confirming that Benjamin is from Hollis is an abstract of death notice found here "Index of DEATHS and MARRIAGES as published in the ELLSWORTH HERALD its successor, the ELLSWORTH AMERICAN October 24, 1851 through December 29, 1865", Compiled by: Mrs. Arthur Ward, Brewer, Maine:

East Bucksport, Jan. 31, Capt. BENJAMIN WHEELER, formerly of Hollis, NH, age 79 years, 3 months, 15 days.

Several deeds will be posted on Benjamin's page show that Benjamin, son of Thaddeus Wheeler, was in Hollis until 1834, at that time he had a wife named Rhoda, and they were heirs of Joseph and Rhoda Rideout.

The children listed in the Wheeler Family of America book belong to Benjamin's brother Amos and his wife Mary (Rideout), all found in the New Hampshire Birth Records. Another error for this marginal source.

However, the fundamental problem of two marriage records remains.

The Hollis record is recorded in two places by separate people who presumably were both looking at the original record: the town clerk abstracting records for the state, maybe about 1905, and Samuel T. Worcester, town clerk of Hollis who wrote the History of Hollis in 1879. The original records cannot be found online, but given two independent readings, probably says the marriage occurred in 1824. This implies there was an earlier wife since there are two children born before this date.

The Bucksport record was probably copied from somebody's family Bible (unclear whose). There is no indication of an earlier wife. Not only is there no record of such a marriage in Hollis, it also requires the Hollis record to be bizarrely wrong (not even same date of year). It is possible, but it also would not be surprising to find one of the children recorded only his mother's name in his family Bible, not the previous wife he never knew, or maybe Benjamin himself did not relay the name of a wife who never lived in Bucksport.

No hard evidence has been found of a different wife's name, or death; nor has any evidence been found that Rhoda was his wife before 1824, or of a marriage in 1818 outside the record made in Bucksport 47 years after the fact. --Jrich 21:35, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
