George Thomas Short married 21 June 1933 in Dallas, Texas. They were neighbors. He'd lived with his widowed mother at 5726 Vanderbilt and she lived with her parents at 5730 Vanderbilt. They had no children. George died 1 October 1975 and Ruth on 21 July 1982. She was a passionate genealogist and among her papers her nieces and nephews found many pictures of people who weren't her relatives. After 30 years we figured out they might be members of George's family. Ruth proved George was eligible for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution. His application can be found on Ancestry.com. One of the proofs was a copy of the page in the family Bible where his mother had recorded her children's births. It was deposited with the genealogy department of the Dallas Public Library. This is an image of a photocopy. George Thomas Short Florence Short Osborne The photo below matches photos of Florence Short Osborne posted on several family trees at Ancestry.com. In the corner of the frame is the imprint "Dallas." Since the identified photo of her matches the image in the one of her with a man, and that man resembles the images of Luther N. Osborne posted on the family trees at Amazon, this is probably Florence and Luther. This photo has Ennis, Texas embossed in the corner. Since the only members of the Short family to live in Ennis were Luther and Florence, this photo is probably their son, Luther N. Osborne, Jr. He was killed January 1943 in the crash of an Army bomber near Mission, Texas. William Cleveland Short & Platter Tobacco Company In the 1910 census William C. Short is recorded as working as a bookkeeper for a tobacco house. There are three photos of a workplace. One is clearly Platter Tobacco Company. another has a cigar sign on the wall and the third shows a young man at his desk. It seems not unreasonable that these photos relate to William Cleveland Short. Dora Elizabeth Short Reed This photo has "Dora E Reed Abilene, Texas" written on the back in shaky handwriting. George's sister Dora married John M. Reed. They're recorded in Abilene in the 1940 census and in recorded there in city directories in 1909 (Clerk, PH Hammond), 1911, 1914, 1917, 1919 (clk T&P Ry, r725 Orange), 1921, 1924 (Clerk Abilene & Sou Ry Co r766 Hickory), 1926, 1928, 1939 (Dora E 1502 Grape), 1942, 1948, 1951 (1502 Grape). Unidentified Photos This photo has "6-12-1920" written on the back in pencil. This photograph has a photographer's imprint of Bowen, Arkansas. This photograph has a photographer's imprint of Colorado Springs, Colo. This photograph has a photographer's imprint of Dallas. It's signed on the front "Love Zats" This photo has a photographer's imprint Madison, Wis. There is writing on the back of this photograph, but it is really hard to read. It appears to say "Miss Ada Crewes." There is a second line but it is illegible. The rest of the photographs have no external information on them. |
