William & Caroline never married. Sidney Smith Sharps birth certificate lists his address as Gwyn St, Bedford and does not include a father. The 1841 & 1851 census show William living in Gwyn St, Bedford. Caroline subsequently married William Valentine in 1847 and moved to Northampton. Sidney’s marriage certificate states his father as William Smith, occupation currier, and he has by this time taken the name of Sidney William Smith. There is no primary evidence for Sidney’s lineage other than a DNA match between me (k1w1) Sidney’s great granddaughter, and a descendant of Emma Berwick (née Smith), Williams sister.
