Family:William Shores and Margaret Tyler (1)

Family listed in two separate census entries in 1920, one in Baltimore, with Margaret as head of household, and the other in Somerset County, with William as head of household. Both censuses were probably taken on January 9, 1920. Information in the two entries is essentially consistent, but the Baltimore enumeration is more detailed. The Somerset County entry comes at the very end of the listing for the ED. Given William's apparent ownership of a schooner, it is not impossible that the family could be in Baltimore and Somerset County on the very same day, but highly unlikely, patricularly in January. The most likely explanation is that they were actually residing in Baltimore in a rental apartment at the time of the census, but expected to return to their home in Somerset County later in the month or year.

A comparative review of four census schedules for this family identifies some discrepancies. Leah SHORES, allegedly born March 1898, only appears in the 1900 census. In 1900, information for Margaret (TYLER) SHORES states that she had given birth to 9 children, of whom 6 survived as of 1 June 1900. The answer to the same question in the 1910 census identifies her as the mother of 11 children, of whom 8 survive as of 1 April 1910. Adding Leah to the other known children of this family results in a total of 12 births - and 8 survivors. Furthermore, Elizabeth L. SHORES, born in March of 1900 according to other sources, is not enumerated with the family in the 1900 census as she should have been. My conclusion is that the Leah SHORES entry in the 1900 census is incorrect, and it should have been Elizabeth L [possibly Leah] SHORES, b. March 1900 instead. However, I have left Leah in the database just in case my conclusion is incorrect. She is presumed dead before 1 April 1910. Other records, if found, may clear up this mystery. Severn J. SHORES appears in the 1910 census as John S. SHORES, with an incorrect age of 12, rather than 15. The Irving SHORES listed in the 1900 census is actually William Irving SHORES. Austin SHORES is actually Henry Austin SHORES.
