Source:Genealogies of the Raymond families of New England, 1630-1 to 1886 : with a historical sketch of some of the Raymonds of early times, their origin, etc. gives the marriage date as 6 Jul 1778, exactly three years different than the vital records. It is not clear where this could come from, except as result of a typo, since Lydia would have been not quite 15 on that date. However, circumspection is warranted, since there is so much confusion around this marriage, given the quick succession of William's two marriages to the Ward sisters, and what looks like an incorrect recording of the birth of his son Alpheus. The 1781 date, given in the vital records, seems to fit well with the sequence of events indicated by Source:Ward family : descendants of William Ward who settled in Sudbury, Massachusetts in 1639, namely, a birth of William and Lydia's first and only child, Alpheus, in May 1782 (10 months after their marriage), and Lydia's apparent death as a result of complications of childbirth at that time, followed by William's subsequent marriage to Lydia's sister Sophia in Nov. 1782.
