"3. Mary Richmond married William Paule in 1657. 'Mary Paull, the daughter of John Richmond of Newport, senior, confessed that she was with child by Richard Canterbury before she was married.' This was in the June 1658 Court session (Rhode island Court Records 1:46). This child was almost surely the 'Hannah Paul, d. Mary' born 14 Oct. 1657 (Taunton VR). William Paule, Scotchman, was sentenced for adultery with Katheren Aines, the wife of Alexander Aines, 5 March 1656/7 (PCR 3:111). On 6 Oct. 1657 William Paul and his wife were expelled from Taunton (PCR 3:122). The James Paule, son of William Paule, born 7 April 1657 (PCR 8:60) cannot be the child of Mary if Hannah is her child."
