    'KNOWLTON, William (1642-) & 1/wf Susannah [?WHITRIDGE]; b 1667, ?28 Oct 1667; Ipswich'

  2. It appears that Torrey is suggesting a marriage date of 28 Oct 1667, even though their first child was born in 1667. It is also possible that there is a 'b' missing from Torrey and it is the date of birth of the first child that he is suggesting occurred on 28 Oct 1667. I could not find their marriage date in VRs.

Torrey Sources from NEHGS record: Knowlton 21, 25; Williams (#16) 106; Tingley-Meyers 170, 193. None of these are VRs.

Knowlton is Source:Stocking, Charles H. W. History and Genealogy of the Knowltons of England and America whose credibility is so accurately assessed on Person talk:William Knowlton (1). p. 21 says William, 1642, m. Susannah ---. p. 25 lists their children giving the birth of Thomas as 1667, no precise date (or basis) given. (The errata book corrects the birth date of William from 1642 to 1643 and suggests there was a second wife. It, incidentally, documents several significant errors in the handling of Thomas.)

Williams (#16) is Source:Williams, Cornelia Bartow. Ancestry of Lawrence Williams : Part I Ancestry of His Father, Simeon Breed Williams, Descendant of John Williams of, p. 106 appears to be literally a copy of p. 21 of the Knowlton book, i.e., "William, b. 1642, m. Susannah ---".

Tingley-Meyers is Source:Tingley, Raymon Meyers. Some Ancestral Lines. William Knowlton is mentioned on p. 191 referring the reader to IV Generation, which is on page 193 which is the important page. Page 170 is merely a reference to him and Susannah being parents of the Marah Knowlton who m. John Jones. On p. 193:
"William Knowlton, of Ipswich and Wenham, Mass., born ---, 1643, Ipswich, Mass.; died March 15 or 16, 1717/18, Wenham, Mass. Cordwainer, aged 26 in 1669. Went to Wenham, Jan., 1678.
"Married first, Oct. 28, 1666, Susannah, daughter of William and Elizabeth Whitridge, of Ipswich, Mass., born April 20, 1648, Ipswich, Mass.; died March 3, 1694/5, Wenham, Mass.
"Married second, ---, 1703, Lydia, widow of Martin Ford and daugther of John and Lydia (Shatwell) Griffin, of ---, born June 21, 1664; died ---."

So we can see that Torrey's problem with the 28 Oct 1667 date is because he copied it wrong. But the fact remains that no primary record of this marriage is presented, nor has one been located, and there are enough questions of Tingley's work (see, for example, Person:Thomas Simmons (3)) that maybe one does not want to believe this without knowing its basis.
