"That Rachel Hubbard was a second wife seems apparent since she would be but twelve years old when William's eldest child was born in 1640. Note the gap of ten years between 1648 and 1658 in the births of his children. The births of the first six are recorded in 1659 in the Boston Record Commissioners, op. cit., p. 68 as children of Rachel. Only the last, Jacob, born late in Nov. 1658, was actually her child. Obviously at Jacob's birth William and his new wife decided that all his children should be recorded and the clerk made the mistake of thinking they were all children of Rachel."
