  2. Source:Fletcher, Edward H. Fletcher Family History : The Descendants of Robert Fletcher of Concord, Mass is not well-done. It does not help that Chelmsford records are less than clear, since they lack much in the way of distinguishing information for the various William Fletchers, but the Fletcher Genealogy seems unaware of much of the information recorded that is in Chelsmford records, suggesting it is poorly researched.

    According to the Fletcher Genealogy:
    1. William Fletcher (67, p. 261), s/o Samuel (14, p. 30) and Hannah, b. 1673 m. Mary --- and has Amos, Sampson, Reuben, Jonathan. Died 27 Jan 1741/42.
    2. William Fletcher (50, p. 209), s/o William (11, p. 30) and Sarah, b. about 1684, m. Tabitha --- and has Lucy, Stephen, William (3068, p. 209 b. 1716), Tabitha, Thankful. Died 24 Mar 1743-44.
    3. William Fletcher (18, p. 31), d/o Samuel (5, p. 28) and Margaret, b. 1671 m. Mary --- and had William (75, p. 302, b. 1702), Samuel, Oliver, Thomas, Robert, Benjamin, Mary, Lydia. Died about 1743.

    Chelmsford VRs show:
    William #1 b. 23 Oct 1673.
    William #2 b. 1 Apr 1688.
    William #3 b. 1 Jan 1673.

    William m. 10 Dec 1701 Mary Fletcher
William m. (int.) 26 May 1716 Mary Foster
William m. (int.) 18 Oct 1724 Mary Powers

    Mary, w. William, d. 13 Dec 1721, a. 39
    Mary, wid. Lt. William, mother Benjamin, d. 23 Feb 1768, a. 84

    Middlesex Probate shows:
Case 7953 is William #2, lists Tabitha and the 5 children shown above.
Case 7955 is William with wife Mary, and the children listed for William #3. Also grandsons Jonathan s/o William, and Eleazer s/o Samuel.

    Three major errors
Possibly the confusion over the birthdate of William #3 is 1 Jan 1672 being promoted to 1 Jan 1673 in one case, demoted to 1 Jan 1671 in the other. See here, here, here. However, 1671 seems incorrect.

The children show for William #1 are all recorded: "Amoss" 11 Jul 1717; "Samson" 13 Feb 1719 (d. 6 Mar 1720/21, a. 2 y, 1 m. so 1718/19); Reuben 2 Jul 1720; Jonathan 20 Jul 1721 (d. 1739, a. 18). But Jonathan is born and died as the son of Lt. William, which is William #3 and show by the death record of his wife Mary, mother of Benjamin. Jonathan died before the William wrote his will so was not mentioned there.

William #1 did not die 1741/42 since that death date matches well with probate 7953 which is William #2 and so does the age at death attached to the death record on that date. Based on age at death, William #1 d. in Westford in 1753. William #2 did not die 1743/44 since his probate is opened in 1742, and the age at death for the death record that day calculates to 1673, not 1684 (estimated birth) or 1688 (actual recorded birth). William #2 is the one who died 27 Jan 1741/42. William #3 is the one who died 21 (not 24) Mar 1743/44 based on the date his probate was opened (April 1744).

Many of the other facets of its presentation do not seem conclusive.
