... (III) William (2), second son of William (1) and Catherine (Goodge) Cottom, was born in Lower Tyrone township, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, March 12, 1820, died February 27, 1902. He attended the district public schools, and when a young man learned the trade of wagonmaker. He follwed his trade in Tyrone township until late in life, when he retired to the town of Dawson, where he died. He was a member of the state militia, ranking as first lieutenant of the Fourth Company, Fifty-second Regiment of the Thirteenth Division, appointed in 1842 by Governor Porter. He was a democrat in politics, and a member of the Methodist church.
He married (first) March 1, 1845, Phoebe Sembower, born June 22, 1821, died August 19, 1871. He married (second) April 2, 1874, Nancy Cochran, born February 14, 1836, in Lower Tyrone township, Fayette county, daughter of Isaac and Rosanna (Sample) Cochran, who tradition says, were the handsomest couple that ever entered Old Tyrone Church. ...
