(William Bassett married) by about 1647 Sarah _____ (assuming she was the mother of all his children).
It has long been stated that the wife of William Bassett was Sarah Burt. In fact, to illustrate how prevalent this belief is, all three of the bibliographic references mentioned by Anderson in his treatment of William Bassett (Source:Essex Genealogist (Massachusetts) (Essex Society of Genealogists), p. 18:28 (1998); Source:Essex Antiquarian (Essex Antiquarian), p. 7:77; Source:Snow, Nora Emma. Snow-Estes Ancestry, p. 2:57) name Sarah Burt as his wife. The will of Hugh Burt names William Bassett as a son, and while this can possibly be explained by Hugh being William's step-father, that seems more than typically generous when natural children are present. Apparently (since Anderson never explicitly addresses it) the rejection of this theory rests on no documented evidence that Hugh Burt had a daughter Sarah, Anderson listing on p. 502 the known baptisms.
