]footnote] "The births of the children are not included in the printed Norwich Vital Records, but the births of the first six were apparently entered somewhere in Norwich records, for they are given in The Pratt Family (1864), which supposes Elizabeth Pratt to have been mother of all the children, and Miss Caulkins in her History of Norwich (1866), p. 159, states that the date of marriage of William Backus to Elizabeth Pratt "is not registered at Norwich, and it is probable that the young couple did not remove to [Norwich] till after the birth of their first son, William, May 11, 1660." She also gives the birth date of the second child, John. It would seem from this that she did find the births of some of the children "registered," probably as children of William without mention of the mother's name, since she followed The Pratt Family in supposing Elizabeth Pratt to have been the first and only wife."
