    Waldo Franklin Hayes, age 81, passed away at the Auburn Rehabilitation & Health Center in Auburn, WA on Monday, March 29, 2004. He has been a resident of Lewis County for the past 70 years.

    He was born on October 31, 1922 in Utopia, Kansas to Orville Alvin and Cecile Zarah (Poston) Hayes. The family relocated to Chehalis where he was a 1942 graduate of Chehalis High School. He served as a member of the Washington State Guard from 1942-1945.

    He married Lois C. Johnson in 1949. The couple had one child, Earl Raymond, prior to their divorce. Earl preceded him in death in 1988.

    He worked at Boone's Garage in Chehalis and was a dispatcher for the Greyhound Bus Depot for several years prior to becoming the custodian for the Saint Helen's Hospital, a position he held for 25 years, retiring in 1984.

    He was a man who loved to tell jokes, enjoyed his family, play cribbage and cards. He enjoyed doing lawn care and traveling in the USA. He was a past member of the Chehalis Eagles, a member of the American Legion Post 22 and a deacon and longtime member of the First Christian Church in Chehalis.

    He is survived by a grandson, [living] and a great grandson, [living]; sisters, [living] of Chehalis, [living] of Kelso and brother, [living] of Chehalis, and numerous nieces and nephews.

    Memorial donations may be directed to the First Christian Church Building Fund, 111 NW Prindle, Chehalis, WA 98532 or the charity of the donor's choice.

    Visitation will be held between the hours of 3-7 PM at the Newell-Hoerling's Mortuary, Centralia, WA on Thursday, April 1. A Private Family Graveside will be held at the Claquato Cemetery, Chehalis with a Memorial Service beginning at 11:00 AM at the First Christian Church, Chehalis on Friday, April 2.
