The funeral was held from the residence Sunday, September 11, at 2:30 o'clock p.m. Burial in Moss Ridge, Rev. W. W. Denham officiated assisted by Rev. F. J. Young.
Phoebe Mapes was born at Columbus, Ind., Sept. 29, 1824. There she grew to womanhood and was married to Francis S. Austin Feb. 13, 1844, and after some four years of residence in that community they moved to Hancock county, Illinois and resided in or near this city until the death of the husband, March 17, 1900.
To this union were born nine children, five of whom survive and are present to honor the memory of a mother's love and devotion.
In early life she gave her heart to Christ and united with the Methodist church and later on coming into closer contact with the Christian church, some eight years ago, she identified herself with the body, thus cherishing growing and constant faith until that faith was changed to sight. "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee the crown of life."
Besides the five surviving children there are thirty-one grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren who together with many distant relatives and many friends remain to sustain this loss.
