  1. Every source found (including those named in Torrey's New England Marriages) shows Thomas with one wife Sarah Cutler, d/o James Cutler. The birth in 1653 of Sarah Cutler is based on the age at death of Thomas's wife Sarah in 1743/44 and also the assumption that he had only one wife.
However, the language in the will of Thomas Waite, referring to his "now married" wife Sarah, almost always indicates a second (or more) marriage. In this case, if there is a second wife, she would also be named Sarah. Obviously a common name, so such a situation is not that big a coincidence. We know the daughter of James Cutler was named as Sarah Waight in the 1684 will of her father, but the probate file contains few other documents, certainly none listing the heirs at the time the will was proved in 1694, nor receipts showing who actually received the bequest. No does the will appear to list the daughters in birth order to confirm whether nor not the birth estimate derived from the one-wife assumption is reasonable (if it is in birth order, the estimate is not, Sarah being named before Mary b. 1643-4, but Mary is named before Hannah b. 1638). No second marriage has been found.
