'Somewhere in or not far from Great Hadham he married again, within three years [of the death of his first wife], to a Mary, whose maiden name is not specifically recorded, though she was likely a "Lewes" or a "Mellett", since Thomas Sanford calls John Lewes and John Mellett of Great Hadham brothers-in-law.'

  2.   CAUTION ABOUT UNRELIABLE DATA:
Note: Ancestry.com has a database called "U.S. and International Marriage Records", in which there is an entry for the marriage of Thomas Sanford to Mary Lewes in 1581. It should be noted that this database includes entries from the family trees of amateur genealogists, and thus cannot be relied on. I've seen this marriage also recorded as being on 21 Sep 1581, but that is the date Thomas married his first wife. Some tree undoubtedly had the marriage noted as "after 21 Sep 1581" and the "after" got dropped. This could have resulted in the entry in the Ancestry.com database. "Lewes" is speculation (see Carlton Sanford source). Her name might as easily have been "Mellett", an equally likely speculation, or something else entirely, as the brothers-in-law could have been married to sisters of Thomas.
