Steele and Caroline named their children for other family members as well as friends.

Their first born son, Abraham Morrison Sample may have been named for Steele's business associate. There is a record of Steele selling the newspaper, The Sky to Abraham Morrison in 1837.s2

George DeCamp Sample appears to be named for Steele's maternal uncle, George DeCamp.

Woodman Stokely Sample appears to be named for someone in the family of Steele's step grandfather. After Steele's grandfather, John Decamp, died, Steele's grandmother, Sussannah Gray DeCamp remarried Nehemiah Stokely.

Johns(t)on Elliott Sample may have been named for a school teacher, Johnston Elliott, in Jefferson Pennsylvania. The evidence is slight, but there was a Johnston Elliott enumerated in the 1850 census of Jefferson, Pennsylvania, where the Sample family was living at the time. S3,S5

The evidence of the source of Henry Chalfont's name is slight. There was a Henry Chalfant that settled in western Pennsylvania in 1827. He ran a store, post office and hotel and that eventually settled in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, during the the time frame when Henry C. Sample was born.S1,S4 Turtle Creek is about 35 miles from Jefferson, Pennsylvania.

John Logan Sample's name may have come from the Reverend John Logan Sample

"Born in Chester County, he [Henry Chalfant] came to Turtle Creek in 1827.... Soon after his settlement in Turtle Creek he became what might be called the Potentate of the valley, for he was the owner of the general store (the market center of a large territory), the Postmaster of one of the early established post-offices of the western country, and was also the proprieter of the long established log tavern, inn, hostel, -- call it what you will, -- with a reputation of high standing. The relay and ticket station for the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia stage-coach line was also at this inn."
